Turn a word search into a little language practice
Simple ways to use your word list before, during and after a puzzle, without making a quiet activity feel like a test.
Look at the words before the grid
Take a moment to read the word list. Match each word to its meaning or picture. If there are pronunciation hints, look at those too. You can check a word in your usual dictionary or learning materials before you begin.
Search for a whole word
Once you spot the first letter or character, check the rest in order. Compare the full spelling against the word list before circling it. For Japanese and Korean, pay attention to the individual characters or syllable blocks instead of guessing from the outline.
Give yourself one small recall task
After finding a word, cover its translation and see if you remember the meaning. If you do not, uncover it and carry on. The purpose is to give the word another moment of attention, not to turn every answer into a score.
Come back to a few words later
Choose three words to jot down or add to your usual study notes. Try recalling them next time you sit down. Use a phrase, an example sentence or a listening resource to meet them in another setting.
